“It’s been fascinating to watch how jewellery confidence has shifted again. We are very much back in a moment of statement.”

Why Vintage Jewellery Has Always Led The Bold Conversation

Although, statement jewellery never really left. Not here.

For a few years, the wider jewellery world softened. Pieces became smaller, lighter, easier to layer and easier to overlook. It reflected the mood at the time. There was comfort in subtlety.

But bold jewellery did not disappear. It simply wasn’t the loudest voice in the room.

In my world of vintage jewellery, it was always there. What I am seeing now, across clients of different ages and across different markets, is a renewed appetite for statement jewellery with presence. Earrings that frame the face rather than disappear into the hair. Necklaces that alone fill the décolletage. Brooches worn with intent. Gold chains with weight. Colour used confidently again. It is not theatrical. It is not costume. It is conviction. The shift is not that statement jewellery has returned. It is that the wider conversation has caught up with something many of my clients have always known. “The right vintage statement jewellery is not a phase. It is a point of view.”

The Shift We’re Watching

There has been a clear reaction to the last five years of understatement. Jewellery became fine and demi-fine, stackable, polite. It whispered. Now it speaks again. You can see it happening across contemporary brands. Proportions are changing. Lines are stronger. Silhouettes are more architectural. There is more presence and more confidence in scale. Vintage jewellery did not need to adjust. It has always occupied that space. But this matters. Not all vintage jewellery is exceptional. Age alone does not make a piece of jewellery interesting, relevant or beautifully made.

The Reality of Vintage Jewellery

For every extraordinary piece of vintage jewellery created over the past hundred years, there are thousands that are average. Pieces that are dated in the wrong way. Pieces that were mass produced without care. Pieces that simply do not hold up in quality or design.

The world is full of old jewellery.

It is not full of remarkable vintage jewellery.

This is where my work truly sits.

My role is not to gather vintage jewellery indiscriminately. It is to filter it. To move through decades of global production and recognise the pieces with presence. The pieces with integrity of construction. The pieces that feel right now and will still feel right years from now.

Often, the best vintage statement jewellery is not obvious. It is scattered across markets, private collections, auctions and dealers. It requires patience, instinct and experience. And just as importantly, it requires the discipline to leave a great deal behind.

JGJ care for your statement jewellery
There is far more that does not make it into my collection than does. When someone comes to Jennifer Gibson Jewellery, they are not simply buying something old. They are accessing the result of that careful curation. The searching. The editing. The decisions. The refusal to include anything that feels mediocre or fleeting. That is why vintage jewellery does statement so well here. Because only the strongest pieces survive the edit.

Art Deco Jewellery: Confidence by Design

If we are talking about statement jewellery with substance, we have to talk about Art Deco jewellery.

Art Deco embraced geometry, symmetry and contrast. It embraced modernity. Jewellery from that era was designed to be seen and to hold its ground.

What makes vintage Art Deco jewellery feel so relevant now is not nostalgia. It is clarity.

When I source Art Deco pieces, I look for proportions that still feel sharp and craftsmanship that still holds up. The pieces that feel architectural rather than decorative. The pieces that do not fade beside modern tailoring. Many contemporary designers are revisiting these same principles in their statement jewellery. The originals already exist.

Vintage Pearl Jewellery, Reimagined

Pearls are another example. For years they were boxed into one very specific image. A neat strand. Understated. Safe. But when you look properly at vintage pearl jewellery, you see something much more interesting. Baroque forms. Scale. Weight. Pearls layered with metal. Pearls used sculpturally rather than sentimentally. What we are seeing now is not reinvention. It is rediscovery. Again, my role is not to include every pearl piece I encounter. It is to select vintage pearl jewellery that feels bold rather than bridal. The pieces that sit just as confidently with tailoring as they would with silk.

Why Come to Us?

Statement jewellery is not about volume. It is about certainty. The wider market may rediscover bold jewellery in waves. Trends will soften and return. But the strongest vintage jewellery was never waiting for approval. Anyone can search for vintage jewellery. Very few people have the time, patience or trained eye to refine a century’s worth of design into something coherent, relevant and enduring. That is what you are really accessing here. A collection of vintage statement jewellery shaped by instinct and experience. Pieces that have already endured once. Pieces that proved themselves. Pieces that will continue to hold their own.

Statement never left.

It simply remained where it has always belonged, in jewellery made with conviction and in the collections of women who never needed trends to validate their choices. If more people are finding their way to it now, that feels like a natural evolution.

“And importantly, statement is personal. What feels bold to one woman may feel effortless to another. That is why our jewel box includes everything from quietly architectural to unapologetically striking.”

We have been here making a statement all along. Which piece makes your statement?
