The Mughal Empire’s Impact on Jewellery

Mughal-inspired jewellery reflects the richest blend of opulence, artistry, and cultural legacy, showcasing the Mughal Empire’s passion for intricate craftsmanship, the use of luxurious materials, and the seamless fusion of Persian and Indian artistic traditions. Rooted in the Mughal Empire’s glory, it influences both fine and fashion jewellery today, admired for its intricate designs and enduring appeal.
The Mughals introduced exquisite Persian artistry to Indian craftsmanship, creating a unique style characterized by floral motifs, vibrant gemstones, and detailed techniques. Jewellery symbolised the Court’s wealth and power, with their designs still inspiring collections across the world.

Distinctive Features of Mughal-Inspired Jewellery

Hallmarks of Mughal jewellery included floral motifs, the setting of gemstones in gold (Kundan work), uncut or Polki diamonds, enamel work including vibrant Meenakari designs and precision in patterns or symmetry.

The Art of Crafting

The Mughal craftsman and jewellers leveraged a rich array of materials to bring their art to fruition. Gold was a mainstay, a symbol of opulence and wealth. Often set with gemstones the gold would shine with rubies, emeralds and Polki or rough-cut diamonds. Some of the most famous Mughal gemstones include rare rubies and emeralds – large and carved or scribed with words. Pearls were incorporated to provide lustrous accent, and enamels were intricate and vibrant.
