Vintage Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer Mythical Sea Creature Earrings 1956

In stock

Undoubtedly the most influential designer of the 1950s Christian Dior's jewellery was as visionary as his clothing. These Vintage Dior Maer Mythical Creature Earrings are an exemplary find, oozing with fascinating history aside of course, from being uber groovy ear adornments. Always an innovator and in search of the best, Christian Dior partnered with a London based jewellery designer called Mitchel Maer to make Dior's jewellery from 1952 to 1956. Dior and Maer's work was second to none during this period. Maer's standout ingenuity created some of the best, most adventurous and mythical early Dior jewellery. Ultimately earning him the unparalleled privilege of co-signing his pieces 'Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer'. The relationship was relatively short lived however and after a few years when Maer became bankrupt the partnership with Dior ceased. Given the exquisite nature and provenance of the Maer for Dior pieces, plus the fleeting existence of this design collaboration, many of the best Dior Maer pieces are considered rare collectors pieces. These earrings are totally wonderful, rare examples of Mitchel Maer's Dior work. Channeling mythical creatures based on Dolphins created in rich gilded metal and decorated with ruby glass drops and devouring oversize glass faux pearls, these earrings are indeed incredible works of wearable art from the House of Dior. Like nothing else. This particular design was also recreated later by the House of Dior this time with green drops by Henkel & Grosse in 1959. The Mitchel Maer Red original version of the design is especially sought after owing to their creation during the lifetime of Monsieur Christian Dior and testament to the extraordinary creations of Maer with Dior. This design by Maer is well documented and heralded in Dior Specialist books and you can see the original sketches too as also shown here which is fascinating. These Vintage Dior Maer Mythical Creature Earrings measure approx. 3.5 cm wide by 2.5cm deep, are in very good vintage condition and are signed Mitchel Maer for Christian Dior on the reverse. A fabulous piece of rare Dior history designed and created Christian Dior's lifetime. Should you choose to buy from us, we commit to the item being as described. Vintage and antique costume jewellery is a luxury traditionally crafted product and it needs special care to preserve its exceptional character. Below please find some advice on care and simple steps you can take:

Your order will include our care card suggesting ways to maintain the condition of your jewellery.

We cannot be held liable for any damages incurred after the receipt of products.

Items are typically most suited to occasional rather than constant wear.

Avoid contact with liquids or humidity including sprays such as water, perfume or hairspray and creams. Exposing jewellery to wet or damp could harm the metal and reduce the life of the plating, as well as cause discolouration and/or loss of stones. Remove jewellery before washing hands, swimming etc.

Store your jewellery in the original packaging or a soft pouch to avoid scratches.

Add your jewellery last when dressing and remove before undressing.

Avoid hard contact (i.e. dropping or knocking against objects) that can cause scratches or chips.

We are always happy to advise on the care specifics of a particular piece you may be considering.
