Vintage Chanel Grande Baroque Pearl Collar and Earrings, Early Karl Lagerfeld 1984
An important and highly desirable vintage chanel pearl necklace and earring suite. Attributed to Maison Gripoix for the House of Chanel and to the first year of the now legendary Karl Lagerfeld at the House.
Beginning with the impressive torsade style necklace. Four decadent rows of large baroque style pâte de verre or poured glass pearls are individually strung and fastened with a statement clasp, designed to be worn at the side, or the nape, as preferred. The clasp displays a huge, poured glass half pearl with an incredible depth of lustre set within a full mount and weighty coiled frame of 22ct gold plated metal. The earrings mirror the necklace clasp with their impressive, coiled frame, huge pearl, and incredibly their construction can only be described as even more substantial such is their exceptional quality. Incredible centuries old workmanship, construction, materials, and style abound in this suite; the likes of which is quite simply standout in comparison to more recent jewels.
The necklace and earrings are signed and dated to different collections, common with couture suites. Clients would purchase subsequent pieces to compliment their existing jewels and some designs punctuated the timeline of the House more than once. This earring style was so revered incarnations of it featured during the 1970s, the early 80s and for a third time in the 1991 Collections. Campaign images in the early 80s and early 90s show models wearing the earrings and none more famous than Linda Evangelista in 1991.
Wonderfully, the necklace date stamp coincides with Karl Lagerfeld joining the House and his early collections, now legendary and immortalised in fashion history. In its own way this suite documents beautifully the evolution of Chanel jewellery markings during the ’70s and 80s as the House lost Coco and Lagerfeld took the helm in 1983. The earrings carry the simple earlier, pre 1980s stamp of simply ‘CHANEL’ and the necklace carries Lagerfeld’s new signature format indicating the necklace was created for season 23 in 1984. The suite straddling the line of the reinvention of the House including the jewels, as Lagerfeld made his mark, quite literally.
A stunning vintage Chanel pearl suite from perhaps the most iconic period of the House and one that will never fail to add an ultra glam and timelessly chic statement to your look.
Since 1910 when Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel opened her first boutique, 21 Rue Cambon, the House of Chanel boasts a heady timeline. A timeline punctuated with iconic fashion moments…the Little Black Dress, No. 5 Parfum, the 2.55 Bag and the glory of the Jewels. Invest in this iconic heritage with your choice of vintage Chanel jewellery and it will prove a timeless style statement.
Vintage Condition: Very good overall without damage or significant wear. Pearls and plating are stable and without cracks or loss. The stringing of the pearls is strong, and each pearl individually knotted. There is the slightest hint of light plate wear on the pearl necklace clasp and darkening of the plating on one of the earring clips. There is the slightest change to the colour of a few of the pearls near to the clasp, most likely due to scent however all pearl finishes remain intact and stable. Both points are extremely minor and mentioned for completeness. Neither affects the wearability or appearance. Compared to most pearl suits of this age this suite has very little age-appropriate wear.

Vintage costume jewellery is delicate and requires special care and attention.
To preserve its continued beauty and condition, it is important to keep your item boxed and protected from other jewellery when not being worn and away from liquids including perfume and hairspray. Items are typically most suited to occasional rather than constant wear.
Your order will include our care card suggesting ways to maintain the condition of your jewellery.
We cannot be held liable for any damages incurred after the receipt of products.
Additional Care Tips:
Avoid contact with liquids or humidity including sprays such as water, perfume or hairspray and creams. Exposing jewellery to wet or damp could harm the metal and reduce the life of the plating, as well as cause discolouration and/or loss of stones. Remove jewellery before washing hands, swimming etc.
Store your jewellery in the original packaging or a soft pouch to avoid scratches.
Add your jewellery last when dressing and remove before undressing. Avoid sleeping in your jewellery.
Avoid hard contact (i.e. dropping or knocking against objects) that can cause scratches or chips.
We are always happy to advise on the care specifics of a particular piece you may be considering.
