Rare 1940s trifari by alfred philippe sterling silver gold vermeil bow

SOLD

A truly outstanding and rare oversize gold vermeil statement Trifari bow brooch. Designed by perhaps the best and most loved designer at Trifari across the many decades; the infamous Alfred Philippe. In 1930 Trifari hired Alfred Philippe as head designer. Philippe’s background was in designing high end fine jewellery for the likes of Cartier and Van Cleef and Arpels and so he introduced a wonderful sense of luxury and style to the company. Indeed his designs led to Trifari costume jewellery pieces resembling cleverly and convincingly fine jewels which in turn led to the immense popularity of Trifari jewels during this period. This particular design is featured in many well known costume jewellery books owing to its substantial size and age, dating from the 1940s. The brooch exhibits beautifully the use of Trifari’s infamous invisible settings for the ruby red baguette cut crystal stones accenting the edges of the bow, originally developed by Alfred Philippe for Van Cleef and Arpels. In creating this look at Trifari, he added a level of craftsmanship and technique that had not been previously seen in costume jewellery which was groundbreaking and truly exciting.  This incredible oversize Trifari bow brooch is a great example of the much admired and documented Alfred Philippe designs and his work as Head Designer for Trifari. Popular opinion is that when Philippe joined Trifari, that is when the company really took off. And so it follows that his pieces are the most sought after by collectors today.

This 1940s Trifari bow brooch is in excellent vintage condition without damage or repair and so incredibly wearable and versatile for today’s and no doubt future fashion and styles. A piece of fashion history and a beautiful heirloom.

The brooch measures a whopping approx. 9.5cm long and 7cm wide. The brooch is clearly signed Trifari with the Crown Trifari mark and is also signed sterling. The solid sterling silver is plated with a heavy gold plate called a vermeil – a popular technique and look in the 1940s Trifari pieces. This Trifari bow brooch is a weighty and large piece containing a significant amount of sterling silver.  The pin features a roll over safety clasp.

A wonderful piece for a vintage jewellery addict or to simply enjoy as a magnificent example of vintage costume jewellery bringing a timeless fashion statement and heirloom to your wardrobe. These pieces are now incredibly rare.

My aim is to find and present to you the best vintage costume jewellery pieces from anywhere in the world, so you can shop the best pieces with ease in our very own Jennifer Gibson Jewellery one stop shop and collection. Vintage costume jewellery is delicate and requires special care and attention.

To preserve its continued beauty and condition, it is important to keep your item boxed and protected from other jewellery when not being worn and away from liquids including perfume and hairspray. Items are typically most suited to occasional rather than constant wear.

Your order will include our care card suggesting ways to maintain the condition of your jewellery.

We cannot be held liable for any damages incurred after the receipt of products.

Additional Care Tips:

Avoid contact with liquids or humidity including sprays such as water, perfume or hairspray and creams. Exposing jewellery to wet or damp could harm the metal and reduce the life of the plating, as well as cause discolouration and/or loss of stones. Remove jewellery before washing hands, swimming etc.

Store your jewellery in the original packaging or a soft pouch to avoid scratches.

Add your jewellery last when dressing and remove before undressing. Avoid sleeping in your jewellery.

Avoid hard contact (i.e. dropping or knocking against objects) that can cause scratches or chips.

We are always happy to advise on the care specifics of a particular piece you may be considering.
